Access to education opens the pathway to progress

At Tata Chemicals Society for Rural Development (TCSRD), the aim is to bridge the educational gap in under-privileged communities through impactful initiatives like the Village Learning Centre (VLC). One such story of transformation is that of Eatipakula Lahari, a 10-year-old girl from a Scheduled Tribe (ST) family in Kandrika village, whose parents relied on daily wage labour and had limited appreciation for the value of formal education.

Although Lahari is enrolled in Class 5 at a local tribal welfare school, she struggles academically because of minimal support at home and a lack of access to learning resources. Her poor academic performance puts her at risk of dropping out or not being able to excel in studies.

TCSRD Intervention

Village Learning Centre (VLC)

During a community outreach effort, our volunteer identified Lahari’s situation and sensitized her parents about the importance of consistent academic support. With encouragement, they enrolled her at the TCSRD supported Village Learning Centre at Mambattu.

From day one, Lahari embraced the opportunities offered by the VLC. With individualized academic attention and participation in group activities, her confidence, communication, and academic performance improved significantly. She soon began to excel in her schoolwork and appeared for the APSWRS Girls School Entrance Exam—a gateway to better facilities and a brighter future.

Outcome

Lahari’s transformation underscores the impact VLCs can have on first-generation learners in tribal communities. Her success is inspiring other families in Kandrika and nearby villages to seek similar support for their children.

Through consistent engagement and educational reinforcement, TCSRD’s VLC model is creating pathways to learning, confidence, and aspiration.
