Started in 1980, the Tata Chemical Society for Rural Development (TCSRD) was formed to support underserved local communities with development initiatives and programmes in and around areas where Tata Chemicals Limited facilities are operational. Though the regions’ geographic conditions, deficiencies, socio-economic requirements, subcultures, etc. differed, TCSRD has firmly protected, nurtured and uplifted the communities by adopting an integrated approach to development and designing region-specific, need-based programmes.
First initiated in Mithapur, Gujarat, TCSRD today has extended to all areas where Tata Chemicals is now operating, which includes Farrukhabad in UP, regions in West Bengal, Mambattu, Cuddalore and Sriperumbudur in Tamil Nadu, Barwani in Madhya Pradesh, Nellore in Andhra Pradesh and Amravati in Maharashtra.
In 2003, Tata Chemicals Society for Rural Development (TCSRD) introduced the Self-Help Group (SHG) model in Makanpur, a small village in the arid Okhamandal block of Gujarat. At the time, financial inclusion and women-led leadership were distant concepts for most households.

Since 1982 TCSRD has been dedicated to the holistic development of the Okhamandal block. This region, surrounded by the sea on three sides, faces a unique challenge—extremely low rainfall and high salinity ingression, which severely impact both agriculture and access to safe water. Even in years of abundant rainfall, water often drains into the sea, leaving the land parched.
